An autobiographical noteDr Le-Las became concerned about the environment as a student at the University of Sussex in the Sixties. During the 1970s she wrote her doctoral thesis on the inquiry into the Greater London Development Plan, which ran for 237 days. She worked out the techniques required to put a case across to best advantage, and the type of arguments that are likely to win the day. In 1980 the University of Kent awarded her her Ph.D.
She was drawn into land-use planning, from academe, as a result of writing her best selling book “Playing the Public Inquiry Game”, which was based on her thesis. Individuals and community groups began asking her to conduct their cases, and she learned on her feet. In 1990 she became Planning Consultant to the National Association of Local Councils, parent body of 7,400 parish, town and community councils in England and Wales. In 1993 she became a Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute. In 1994 she was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Society of Arts, Commerce and Manufacturing. Owing to her knowledge of planning procedures and experience of working at grassroots level, the Secretary of State for the Environment appointed her to the Radioactive Waste Management Advisory Committee in 1998. In 2001 she joined the management consultancy team at IDM: see www.idmsolutions.co.uk. She was appointed as a Special Advisor to the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management in April 2005. During 2006 she has become planning consultant to Nirex, a company dealing with the safe storage and disposal of radioactive waste, and also CPRE Kent. From 1998 until 2002 she held an Honorary Lectureship in Law at the University of Kent and during 2003/4 she was an Honorary Lecturer in Law at University College London. During 2004-2005 Dr Le-Las was a Consultant Planning Inspector. In 2008 Dr Le-Las was appointed an Honorary Research Fellow in the Durell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent. Dr Le-Las is still an academic with more than eighty publications in the field of environmental law and policy. She is regularly invited to give lectures to academics, professional and lay people on environmental policy and procedures. |
